Mario Bermúdez Gil
MARCAT DANCE

Mario Bermúdez Gil is the Artistic Director, Choreographer, and principal dancer of Marcat Dance, a contemporary dance company he co-founded with Catherine Coury and which is based in Vilches, Jaén, Spain.
A native of Vilches, Bermúdez trained at the Andalusian Dance Center in Seville (2008–2010) and later worked in New York (2010–2012) with Gallim Dance and Jennifer Muller/The Works. He subsequently joined the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv (2012–2016), performing works by Ohad Naharin, Sharon Eyal, Hofesh Shechter, and Roy Assaf.
Bermúdez’s choreographic voice is distinguished by its dynamic physicality and emotional intensity, and his works are performed both by Marcat Dance and by leading international companies, including the Spanish National Dance Company, National Dance Company Wales, Hung Dance Taiwan, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, and the flamenco dancer Eva Yerbabuena.
Throughout his career, Bermúdez has received numerous awards, among them the Andalucía Prize for Theatre and Performing Arts, the Ojo Crítico Prize for Contemporary Dance from Spain’s National Radio, the MAX Awards, the Spanish Academy Talía Awards, the PAD Awards, and was named in Dance Magazine´s ´25 to Watch´. In 2025, his piece Averno received five Lorca Awards, including Best Choreography and Best Male Dance Performance.
In addition to his creative work leading Marcat Dance, Bermúdez maintains an active pedagogical and collaborative practice internationally, giving workshops, masterclasses, and residencies at institutions such as NOD (Italy), the University of Michigan (USA), and BlueBox (Vienna), among others.
Mario is also the co-founder and co-director of Festival Vildanza, an international contemporary dance festival that each summer transforms his hometown of Vilches into a meeting point for creation, training, and the celebration of dance.
