Karma Dance (Mental Health & Trauma) CIC is inviting applications from a white male dance artist and a Deaf male dance artist to join the company’s research and development (R&D) for Boot Polish — a new dance theatre work exploring power, identity, race, Deaf experience, and lived experience.
Selected applicants will be invited to an online interview.

1. White Male Dance Artist
We are seeking a white male dancer for a specific role within the work.
This role would suit an artist with strong technique, sensitivity, and an interest in contributing to a research-driven creative process exploring race, identity, and power.
Fee & Support:
£2,025 total
Travel and accommodation not provided.

2. Deaf Male Dance Artist
We are also seeking a Deaf male dance artist to join the R&D process.
This opportunity is designed as a structured, real-world placement that supports a Deaf dancer in transitioning from training into professional practice. The selected artist will be directly involved in rehearsals and sharing processes, gaining insight into professional creative workflows while contributing meaningfully to the development of the work.
We are particularly interested in artists who:
Identify as Deaf (profoundly Deaf preferred)Are open to engaging with process-led, research-driven creationAre willing to work across different studio environments, teaching styles, and communication approachesAre curious, reflective, and open-minded within collaborative processes
Access & Support: We will tailor communication and working methods to support access needs, including:
Visual cuesVibration cues (e.g. Woojer jackets)Lighting cuesWritten and visual instructionsBritish Sign Language (BSL)
This placement supports the dancer in identifying and developing the access approaches that work best for them within a professional context.
Fee & Support:This is a paid internship opportunity, combining artistic development with financial support. The fee will be confirmed with the selected artist.
